Buying Poker Chip Sets

One of the more convenient ways to buy poker chips is as part of a set. However, before you rush off to the store, there are a few things to think about. You should know how many chips you'll need. A small friendly game will require fewer chips than a large event. Also, pay attention to your budget and your poker chip requirements. While there are plenty of cheap plastic poker chip sets on the market, they aren't necessarily what you'll want.

Some players will prefer higher end, professional style clay chips. There are even decorative chip sets with mother of pearl inlay, or those made from wood. However, expect to pay a lot for higher quality poker chips. If you don't have the budget for the best, you can certainly buy a lower end set. Don't cut too many corners, however, or you'll end up with chips that don't have a good feel, aren't durable, or which stack awkwardly.

If you're having trouble deciding how many chips to get for your game, here's a good way to choose. Three to four players will need a chip set of about three hundred. For four to six players, user a four to five hundred chip set. Six to eight players need a five hundred to six hundred fifty chip set, and eight or more players may need a thousand chip set or more. Of course, the actual numbers you'll need will depend on your players and how they play. However, it's hard to have too many chips, but it's easy to have too few. So, round up, and don't worry about having more chips than you need. Many sellers of poker chip sets maintain an open stock. This is great, because you'll be able to buy more as you go and still have them match.

How much will your chips cost? It depends on how high quality they are, how many you're getting, the material they're made of, and the number of colors you get. Most poker chip sets come with a case to carry them, cards, dice, and often a button for the dealer. If you're shopping online, a set of three hundred composite chips in two colors can cost you seventy-five dollars and up. Chips that are made from real clay run around twenty-five dollars more per set than composite ones, and three color sets are more expensive still. However, poker chips are an investment you only have to make once, since one set will last you for years.
